David Kisses a Teammate When They Aren't Expecting It CW: Light mentions of previous character death. - 3k Words. David and Teddy flee seemingly certain death. When his teammate mentions not having any regrets, David does something stupid and kisses him. And maybe spends too much time in his own head.

David doesn't even bother to look up at the sound of knocking at the front door. His eyes are busy flicking over the page of a book. Not something he'd normally do, but it's for his AP English class, and he's going to need to read it several times to prepare for the test in the spring. His powers did a lot, they helped him get through class, but they didn't mean he retained anything.

David rises, because hey, if someone's at the door he at least wants to feel what the person there might know. A... test of his ability. That being said, he wasn't expecting what he found there. His dad standing in the door looking at a flier.

"What's up, Dad?"

His dad closes the door and as David moves across the room the man turns to him, holding up the paper.

A picture of David from breakfast two days ago. He's at the kitchen counter, finishing the breakfast of Eggs Benedict for his family. The recipe you'd gleaned from your father's head. Above it, printed in red on a black frame, 'Mutant Freak' Below it in white, 'Wanted: Dead Or Alive.'

Racist stuff, no doubt from one of the local, hate mongering groups. And the flier in his father's hand, holding it up for David to see.

"I don't understand."

David takes it from his father and sighs. He's got suspicions. Those women a the library, who had figured him out so fast. Here David'd thought he'd been doing so well at hiding it. It wasn't like he had a visible mutation. Something full subtle. Uncontrolled, yes, but subtle.

"I... that woman at the library... she must have figured it out," David says. And it's the wrong thing, he realizes it immediately as his father speaks again.

"It's true? My son is a... is a..."

His dad's voice is breaking, confused. Upset? And it hurts. Hurts deeply. Because this wasn't what you expected from them. Not from him. Not from your family. To think that David's own father would be a racist. Would react like this. How was that even possible? How could he, after everything their family often went through? After all the grief David's gotten in so many other things, it doesn't make sense. And yet David opens his mouth, voice sharp, as he reaches for the doorknob and opens the door.

"A what, Dad? A freak? A deviant?" The door opens wider and David's voice is getting louder, sharper, angrier. "The word you're looking for is mutant."

With that David steps through the door, slamming it loudly behind him. Because how can he not? And it hurts, in a way he can't put into words. Hurts so bad as he keeps walking down the sidewalk. Away from home. Who even knows if he can easily go back. Mom didn't react yet. There could still be support there. But he keeps walking, because he doesn't know if he can handle looking back right now.

E - Harvard - CW: Racism, Parental Disapproval

There was something amazing about them being here. David and his family together at the Grindhouse, the cafe that he had gotten used to now that he was living at Xavier's School. Here he was, ready to talk to his family who had been supportive enough to come to the school to see them. It was serious progress for his Dad. Sure, Mom had been nothing but supportive, but letters and calls didn't compare to his Dad actually being here.

"I spoke to my friend in admissions at Harvard, David."

Oh man, good news too. David can't help the grin and overwhelming hope at the statement. Harvard. It was his goal. Things had gotten weird since becoming a mutant and yeah, he'd given up a few things, but he definitely wanted to do something with his life. Something good. Law, or maybe medicine? He didn't know yet. Engineering could be good too. And there were some great minds at Xavier's that he was picking for all of these right now, so he figured he'd know soon.

"And? Did you show him my transcript? Did you tell him about the classes I took at the University of Chicago?" He knew that the dual-enrollment had been a great plan.

Of course all that energy and excitement was met with a disappointed look from his father. A pained one. And Mom, well, she was just sitting, watching. Seemed like she didn't know what was about to be said.

"David, he said... oh. This is hard," his father answered, and David could feel his heart breaking. Right then, right there. That wasn't his father's tone for good news. It was the 'I'm sorry we're not getting a puppy' tone. "He said they don't accept students from Xavier's."

AKA, didn't accept mutants. Fucking hell. Modern racism, always the best, right? And it was impossible to keep the pain from his voice. "Oh. Let me guess. My power makes it impossible for them to trust my grades," he sighed, because David got it. Sometimes he didn't trust it himself. "But just because I absorb other people's knowledge doesn't mean I can't learn it on my own."

Of course there isn't much more than the heartbreak that he can deal with. This was... crushing. In every possible way.

"We could sue them," Mom piped up, and David wanted to smile at her. It was fruitless, but damn if she wasn't trying to lead the charge.

"Dorothy," his father continued, again in that damn tone of defeat and stern disapproval. David didn't get it. Why couldn't they fight? "You know it wouldn't work. David's power aside, they'll claim they can't protect him. A student openly from Xavier's would attract violence. Harvard can't have that."

Can't have that? Can't... David grits his teeth and resists pounding a hand on the table.

"So what are you saying, Dad?" David asks, and through some miracle keeps the bitterness from his voice.

"I'm saying that if you want to go to college, you need to leave Xavier's."

No. No, that isn't something he can do. But how does he make them understand? How does he make anyone.

Not a shared memory, but if you want to see more about David telling his parents that Xavier's IS his decision, he's two nice pages of comics.

F - Goodbye Laurie | CW: Character Death, Referenced Hate-Crimes and Explosions, Death of Teens

Things have been bad. No, that's putting it lightly. Things have been horrible. Waking up one day without his powers had been hard. The excitement his parents had at the idea that he would return home was harder. The fact that there had been terrorists who blew up a bus full of now human kids and teens because who knew why... Everything had been bad. The way Jay had been hurt and broken, the way mutants had died because they no longer had their powers, the way...

Getting called into Headmaster Summers' office hadn't been surprising. But the way the meeting had gone so far? Definitely approaching a new sort of low point since the emptiness had come to fill the places in his head that used to dance with knowledge.

"I'm sorry, what?" Because David had to have it repeated. There was no way what Scott was saying was right.

"We've decided," Cyclops said, in full uniform to boot, from the other side of the desk, "that it's in your best interest to stay at the institute, David. With the attack on the human students as well as the presence of the Sapien League and copycat serial killers going after former mutants, you're a target."

Blunt, of course. It was actually possible that Scott Summers had no heart.

"And This is the solution? No offense, but this isn't exactly the safest place on Earth, Mr. Summers. I'm support to go to school. My family..." They wanted him home. They wanted him to go to Harvard. He wasn't going to, his plans fell in a bit closer to Xavier's now. He had to be here for his friends, to support them. But some things were back on the table now.

"Your family agrees with the decision. Besides... would you really want to put them at risk?"

The words are a knife to the gut. How dare Scott talk about risk. How DARE Cyclops suggest that he didn't understand. It was just... It was just that David had no place here anymore. He wasn't a mutant. He had lost that. He had lost what made him one of these people.

"I just... I'm so useless here," David mumbled out, unable to look at Scott. not directly. "But it doesn't matter, does it? This has already been decided."

Without asking him. He was coming up on eighteen. This SHOULD have been his decision.

"I'm sorry, David."

Silver lining. Find a fucking silver lining. That was all David could do. He had to try.

"Professor Xavier always wanted to admit Human students. I just didn't... I just didn't think the first one would be me."

David barely gets the thought out before the office door snaps open and there is Professor McCoy, also fully dressed as if he was about to go out into a fight.

"Scott!" Beast says even as Scott tries to ask what's happening. "There's been another attack. Come quickly!"

His eyes catch David's, and there's a frown on Beast's feline lips.

"And David... You should come too."

The bottom of David's stomach goes out as he's on his feet and racing after Beast. Who is it this time? Nori? Josh? Or had Jay broken and thrown... No, Hank said attack. That meant something external. It meant not Jay breaking further. It's breaking David just to think about it as three sets of feet slam throgh the hallways.

He gets it the second he steps outside, because Josh's voice is still screaming. Still raised in one name. Over it there's the repetition of No from Noriko, still audible when Bishop's shouting over her. And yet it still doesn't process until you see her there, on the ground, in Nori's arms. When you see her there and Josh is still struggling against Wolverine.

"Laurie?"

It's not possible. Not her. Anyone but her. Laurie, gentle and soft and kind. The heart of the team, because the rest of them were just too crazy to be that. David bolts across the last few feet, falling to his knees at Nori's side. At....

"David, I..." Nori starts to say but the words have no meaning. They're just... They're just sounds that don't matter because Laurie's sprawled on the ground, most of her face red from blood, a bullethole between her eyes.

"No, Laurie, not you," manages to get past David's lips, the preface to the tears cutting down his cheeks and the pain eating him from the inside out. "Not you."

[Connected to This Memory. Neither gets into full on graphic, but feel free to assume having seen full on graphic relations.]

[This isn't how this was supposed to happen. At all. But things always went sideways when Josh was involved, and David... Fuck, the things he did for Josh always meant things went a bit too far. Got a bit too intense. Were a bit too... much.

Tonight was no different from the rest. Tonight he'd shown up at the door of the clinic you'd set up, his skin leaden, dark and sans color on any bit of his body but for the scarlet of his blood. And the frank honesty was that things were never as easy as that. Slowly he'd fished bits and pieces and all the like out of Josh, and tried not to say how much it hurt to see Josh like this. Broken and breaking. But you knew quite a bit about how to handle him, didn't you, David? Hadn't you always? Soft words and careful touches and light cooing. It'd been enough, until you'd had the bleeding stopped and Josh lying down on the bed in the back room. The bed is narrow like the ones at Xavier's, which means that you can't lay side by side. Instead he's draped over you, and...

Oh dear lord the and. He has a smell, when he's gold and healed, like warmth and metal and a touch of spices. You wonder if he knows that he does. Maybe it's aftershave. Maybe it's his soap. But how many times have you thought and wondered? How often have you wanted to let your tongue meet the skin to find if it would taste of gold, or skin and sweat, or cinnamon. It's why you don't let him this close any more, the temptation, the desire. The way the light played off his skin, and the way he needs you. Fuck do you want to be needed. You want that warmth and that support and that needs, more than anything. Because when you reach out and touch the world it all falls apart, time and time again. But Josh? Josh always builds back up. Josh doesn't change, immutable. Or maybe he does, but it's not enough.

The weight of him, the warmth of him, the fact that you've almost lost him again? It's not okay. It's not good. It's not remotely cool. Not remotely worth it either. And yet... You want him. As much as you hate yourself for it, David, you want him. Have for a while now. Just about hated Joey for being the one to figure it out sooner, figure himself out sooner, figure out that he wanted Josh in his arms. But who has him now? Who was the one on the outside, able to lean up and press chapped lips against warm, sweet, soft ones?

It takes a moment, but he pulls back, and that's when you know he's not yours. He'll never be yours. That you're not likely to win this battle, because you were never meant to. Can see how he pulls back, and it cuts to the quick. Stop, David, you want to tell yourself, but instead your hand betrays you, coming up to cup his cheek. Stop, your brain says.]

I can make it good for you.

[You shouldn't. But your fingers glide back and up and into his hair, stroking through it before they massage down his neck. It's not like anyone else is giving Josh what he needs. It's not like he's with Joey anymore. It's not like anyone could care. But if they did... if that worries him... He can say no. Josh can always say no. But he doesn't, as you lean up and cease his lips again, offering something slower. Something lingering. Something with heat as your free hand finds the swell of his ass and squeezes. And he makes the most beautiful noise as you roll him under you.

He looks good against the sheets, black because they don't show blood. He looks good, golden and shining and beautiful. Perhaps Josh is just meant for things like this. For pleasure and hunger and the finer things. You can't give him that. He'll never let you. But he doesn't protest, and he doesn't say no, and for now, that's good enough. And you're going to make it more than good enough. You're going to make it amazing.]

These are all memories I'm not typing up, but are in small bite-size form from comics. Enjoy. Typically David's pretty easy to pick out because he's often the only black guy in the pages.

H - Training - David getting a leg up on Wolverine in a fight. [1] [2] [3]

I - Argument - David and Julian argue over whether Scott or Wolverine are right on splitting up Mutant Kind. [1] [2]

J - Minimum Wage - Literally the best panels of David being DONE WITH THIS SHIT ever. [1] [2] [3] [4]
